Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 15, 2026
Subtext ("the app", "we", "us") is a rehearsal tool for actors. We built it to be private by default: there is no account to create, and we do not ask for your name, email, or any profile information to use the app. This policy explains exactly what data the app handles, why, and who processes it on our behalf.
What the app handles
- Scripts you import. PDFs and the text or page images you add are stored on your device. To identify characters, scenes, and dialogue, the relevant text or rendered pages are sent to our processing service and to our AI analysis provider. We do not use your scripts to train any model, and we do not sell or share them.
- Microphone audio (during rehearsal). When you rehearse, your microphone audio is streamed in real time to a speech‑to‑text service so the app can tell when you've delivered your line. This audio is processed live to produce a transcript and is not recorded or stored by us. The microphone is only active while you are in a rehearsal session.
- Scene‑partner voice audio. The lines spoken by your AI scene partners are synthesized by our voice provider and cached so re‑running a scene is instant. Cached audio is keyed only to the voice and the line text — it carries no identifier that links it to you, and the cache may be shared across the service to reduce cost.
- A random device identifier. On first launch the app generates a random identifier used only to rate‑limit requests and to sign them for security. It is not linked to your identity and is regenerated if you delete and reinstall the app.
- Subscription status. Purchases are handled entirely by Apple. We receive only whether you have an active subscription (via Apple's StoreKit). We never see your payment details — no card numbers, no Apple ID.
What we do not do
- We do not require or collect your name, email, or contacts (unless you choose to email us).
- We do not use third‑party advertising or analytics SDKs to track you across apps or sites.
- We do not sell, rent, or trade your data.
- We do not use your scripts or voice to train AI models.
Service providers
To deliver the app's features we rely on a small set of processors who handle data only to perform their function:
- Apple — App Store distribution and all subscription payments. (Apple Privacy Policy)
- Cloudflare — our backend service and caching infrastructure that routes requests securely. (Cloudflare Privacy Policy)
- Anthropic — AI analysis of script text to find characters, scenes, and delivery. (Anthropic Privacy Policy)
- ElevenLabs — text‑to‑speech for scene‑partner voices and real‑time speech‑to‑text for line detection. (ElevenLabs Privacy Policy)
Data retention
- On your device: your scripts and markup stay on your device until you delete them or delete the app.
- Microphone audio: processed live for transcription and not retained by us.
- Cached voice audio: retained to serve future rehearsal requests efficiently; it contains no personal identifiers.
- Rate‑limit records: the random device identifier and request counts expire automatically (within roughly 48 hours).
Your choices
You can remove all locally stored scripts and data at any time by deleting the app. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple ID settings. For any question about your data — including a request to delete information associated with your device identifier — contact us at the address below and we'll help.
Children
Subtext is intended for a general audience of working and aspiring actors and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
International users
The app's providers may process data in the United States and other countries. By using the app you understand that your data may be processed in jurisdictions with different data‑protection laws than your own.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new "Last updated" date.
